RIAA Wooing California District Attorneys with Free Drinks, CD give-aways
Posted by Jason Schultz
According to P2Pnet and the California District Attorney Association's website, the RIAA is throwing quite a party this Thursday at the DA's yearly convention:
Reception and Awards & Installation Banquet (Thursday, July 1 5:30 p.m.)- The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) is hosting the banquet reception. Banquet attendees will receive two complimentary drinks and be entered into the drawings for free CDs!
- The 2004-05 CDAA Officers and Board of Directors will be installed at the banquet following the presentation of the annual awards.
Now why would the RIAA be wooing California District Attorneys? Could it be in anticipation of them using AB2735 to criminally convict file-sharers for failing to identify themselves when they swap on P2P networks? I mean after all, they did buy two complimentary drinks for each of them and the possibility of wining a free CD!
But let us not worry. I'm sure that these fine public representatives will not let such blatant pandering influence their unfettered prosecutorial discretion and priorities when deciding which crimes to spend our tax dollars fighting in California. No, really.

Man, the RIAA must believe that California DA's come cheap.
Maybe they're right; the California Legislature seems to be pretty cheap.

Can it get any more obvious what they're trying to do? I hope all this just gets them fined. Of course, in this state, that won't happen.

Hello,
I was the guy who alerted pNp.net
to the DA's taking money from RIAA.
There is a link on the DA's web page
which allows comment, not posted to
a forum, but to someone in their
organization. It would be good for
all of us to go the www.cdaa.org and
use the link to give them some
negative feedback.
If anyone following the forum is
being prosecuted in California for
file sharing, it would be good to
tell them about this. Their's a good
chance a DA can be disqualified from
a prosecution because of the banquet.
Best to let your defense lawyer look
at it, but remember, they may not
want to be unfriendly to the DAs
I am trying to get a forum off the
ground regarding DA misconduct. It
is very common, this was a minor
example, and you can see, they are
not used to being questioned about
it, they make no effort to hide the
RIAA support on their web site.
Please pass the word to everyone
being prosecuted.
Thanks,
Steve White

A quick follow up, though it's a bit
off this forum topic:
That DA's web site also mentions
