Here we'll explore the nexus of legal rulings, Capitol Hill
policy-making, technical standards development, and technological
innovation that creates -- and will recreate -- the networked world as we
know it. Among the topics we'll touch on: intellectual property
conflicts, technical architecture and innovation, the evolution of
copyright, private vs. public interests in Net policy-making, lobbying
and the law, and more.

All true, I agree. And the fines need be adjusted.
But if you've gotta have a ferocious, life-altering fine, who better to hand it to than a smug and self-entitled snot like Joel?
Determining valuation of damage is difficult in certain cases, but I think this is excessive. However, what is the alternative?
The problem is the sense of entitlement that many (most?) younger folk feel to the product(s) of others... People say "it is available for free on the Internet, why should I pay?" Where is logic and reason? Where is critical thinking?
I suggest that logic, reason, and critical thinking are gone. Most people don't think past how they feel. Of course, I don't really expect anything to change as "we" expect others to provide for the things we want... Sad really...
